How the laws changed

A short history of the closures

Washington and Idaho were closed long before the current wave, because their state laws already treated sweepstakes redemptions as gambling. Michigan followed when its Gaming Control Board, which licenses real-money online casinos, sent cease-and-desist letters to every major sweepstakes brand.

The 2025 legislative sessions brought the first purpose-built bans: Nevada’s SB 256, Montana and Connecticut in October, New Jersey in August and New York by year end. California’s AB 831 took effect on January 1, 2026, and Indiana, Maine, Tennessee and Louisiana passed their own laws during 2026. Oklahoma’s ban takes effect on November 1, 2026.

Other states debated bills that did not pass, Maryland among them. We review this page monthly and the date at the top of the site is the last check. Casinos usually email registered players a few weeks before a closure, and most pay out pending redemptions before the date.
